Working Smart Is… Taking your Skills Freelance when you’re thinking of starting new careers in the UK

By landfusionuk at 2012-04-27 05:02:30
“What do you do?” It’s an often asked question, and one I’m sure you’ve heard (and answered) many times. Chances are when you answer that question you tell people your career title, or give them a summary of your job before you tell them who you work for. It makes sense. People want to know about your knowledge and skills more than they want to know about your employer.

So why do we then go and define our careers by the people who employ us?

It’s a paradox. Too many people see themselves solely as employees. Their careers stand or fall by the opportunities (or lack of them) presented by the jobs employers give them. This is wrong. No employer should be bigger than your career ambitions.

Taking the Road Less Travelled – Going Freelance

Getting more out of life often means taking chances. Getting more out of your career means redefining what your career stands for. Are you content for your ambitions to be shaped and shackled by your employers? Or are you willing to do things differently?

By taking your skills freelance you have the freedom to push your career in new directions, and to new heights. The advantages are you get to choose who you work with, and how much you get paid. If you are happy in your job you can run a freelance business based on your skills alongside it. That way, you get the best of both worlds.

But what about time? A fulltime career is draining enough without going freelance, right?

Well, it depends on your thinking. One week of 7 days is 168 hours. A fulltime job normally takes up around 40-45 hours with overtime included. That is about a quarter of your available time. You might only need 20 hours a week extra to make a real go of a freelance business. Even if you want to keep your weekends fully intact, you can still find 20 hours per week early in the mornings, in the evenings, or by taking advantage of work breaks and travel time to and from work.

Most people who commit to doing something alongside their jobs are often pleasantly surprised at just how much they can get done with the time they have!

How to go Freelance

Going freelance is easy. Here’s what you need to do.
1) Get a freelance plan: Build a plan around your knowledge and career skills. What are you offering? How are you going to offer it? To whom are you going to offer it? It’s good practice to package up your knowledge and skills into an offering that helps others move closer to their goals. Get your finances in order. Work out how much you need to set things up, what you need to be successful (marketing material, website etc.), and put together a profit / loss projection. If you need finance, get a business plan and go to the bank.

2) Set up your business structure: Whether sole trader, partnership or limited entity, you need to set yourself up legally with HMRC, and with Companies House (if limited).

3) Goal set: Set yourself achievable goals to get yourself up & running. Break your goals down into tasks, and set dates to them. This will help focus your ambitions, and help get some momentum behind you.

Go for it – and good luck in your new career as a freelancer!
